President, PM greet nation on Janmashtami

New Delhi, Sep 3 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice President M Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today greeted the people on the occasion of Janmashtami, which is being celebrated tomorrow.

In her message, the President said the life and teachings of Lord Krishna had a universal message of doing our duty without thinking about the rewards.

''May this festival inspire all of us to follow the path of virtue and righteousness in thought, word and deed,'' she said.

Extending his ''hearty greetings and good wishes,'' Mr Ansari said the festival reminded us of the birth, simplicity and heroic deeds of the young Lord Krishna ''who is immortalised in our popular consciousness. We must derive inspiration from the life and teachings of Lord Krishna.

''On this occasion, let us rededicate ourselves to the teachings of Lord Krishna and work for the creation of a just and peaceful society.'' In a message, the Prime Minister said, ''Janamashtami reminds us of Lord Krishna's eternal message of performing one's duty without any expectation for reward. Let us follow the divine teachings of Lord Krishna pledge to rededicate ourselves to the welfare of the people and of our country. May the festival herald peace, prosperity and happiness for all.'' Welfare Board for Handicapped people: Minister

Puducherry, Sep 3 (UNI) A Welfare Board would soon be set up for the benefit of Handicapped people in the Union Territory, Welfare Minister M Kandasamy said here today. Distributing benefits of various welfare schemes to the physically challenged and visually challenged people and also to various artists belonging to poor families at a function here, he said three per cent reservation quota in employment for the physically challenged would be implemented in all government departments, professional colleges and private industries.....

Left parties to protest nuke deal, joint naval exercises

Bangalore, Sep 3 (UNI) The Left parties will launch a week-long stir in Karnataka as part of their nationwide protest against the Indo-US nuclear agreement and the joint naval exercises with the US tomorrow. Gaur defends opening up of Reliance Fresh

Bhopal, Sep 3 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Excise Minister Babulal Gaur today defended the decision to allow opening up of Reliance Fresh stores in the state saying it was in the overall interest of growers and consumers. He parried question about Bharatiya Janshakti Party (BJS) President Uma Bharti giving a 15-day ultimatum for shutting down Reliance Fresh in the state or face ''public action'' saying that it was for the Chief Minister to decide.
