PM greets the nation on Janamashtami

New Delhi, Sept 3: The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has greeted citizens in India and abroad ahead of Janamashtami, which will be celebrated on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

“The festival reminds us of Lord Krishna"s eternal message of performing ones duty without any expectation of reward. Let us follow the divine teachings of Lord Krishna and pledge to rededicate ourselves to the welfare of the people and of our country," Singh said in his message.

May the festival herald peace, prosperity and happiness for all", he added.

According to Hindu mythology, Krishna is the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe and one of the trinity of Gods, the other two being Lord Brahma, the Creator and Lord Shiva, the Destroyer.

Lord Vishnu is said to have taken birth as a human being to destroy the evil King Kansa who ruled over 5000 years ago.

Janmashtami is celebrated on two consecutive days, the day when Krishna was born, and the day when he was brought to Gokul by his father Vasudeva.
