LDF's wrong Abkari policy led to tragedy: Chandy

Palakkad, Sep 3 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy today said the recent liquor tragedy at Avaneeshwaram in Kollam, which resulted in the death of three persons, was due to the wrong excise Policy of the Left Democratic Front Government.

Addressing newsmen here, he asked the government to make public the post-mortem and blood test reports of the victims of the incident which occurred on August 28.

He said as many as 1,650 shops were allotted without increasing toddy production. This resulted in the flow of spurious liquor.

Mr Chandy also said Excise Minister P K Gurudasan's statement that the victims dided due to excess consumption could not be justified.

Kuznetsova to lead Russia in Fed Cup final v Italy

MOSCOW, Sept 3 (Reuters) World number four Svetlana Kuznetsova will lead a powerful Russian team in this month's Fed Cup final against champions Italy. Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev today named the 2004 US Open champion along with world number six Anna Chakvetadze, world number eight Nadia Petrova and 56th-ranked Elena Vesnina for the Sept. 15-16 final at Moscow's Luzhniki arena. Tarpishchev did not include world number two and 2006 US Open champion Maria Sharapova, who pulled out of the July semi-final.....

RCom awards 1.5 bn US Dollar contract to Fujitsu

Mumbai, Sep 3 (UNI) Private telecom major Reliance Communications (RCom) today announced that it has awarded 1.5 billion US Dollars turnkey contract to Japanese telecommunication company Fujitsu to construct Flag next generation network worldwide. The Flag Next Generation Network (NGN) Submarine Cable will involve construction of 4 new cable systems across Mediterranean, East Africa, Asia and Pacific region. Upon completion, the Flag NGN cable will nearly double the length of existing Flag Global Network from 65,000 km to 115,000.....

JE crosses 100 mark in UP, toll at 107

Gorakhpur, Sep 3 (UNI) The vector-borne killer Japanese Encephalitis (JE) toll crossed the hundred mark in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, following the death of nine more children today. Last year, the deadly JE had killed almost 1,000 people in UP, while the scourage has already killed several thousands of people in the region over the last decade. Sources said so far, 688 JE patients had come to the Baba Raghav Das Medical College and Gorakhpur district hospital, of which 107 including seven.....
