Khanduri hints at crackdown on N D Tiwari govt's scams

New Delhi, Sept 3 (UNI) A day after winning the Dhumakot assembly bypoll, Uttarakhand Chief Minister B C Khanduri today hinted that within a week a crackdown would be launched to expose the scams committed during the ''corrupt'' Congress regime in the state.

''Wait for about a week more, and you will hear about some concrete measures to check corruption,'' Maj Gen Khanduri told mediapersons here.

His government would complete six months in office on September eight and some major decisions would be announced on that day, the Chief Minister said when asked about the over 50 scams he had listed against the Congress Government during the assembly poll campaign.

''People in the state were reeling under a corrupt Congress Government and that's why they threw it out. Now I have to fulfill my manifesto promise to root out this evil, as it is for this that my party has been given a mandate,'' he added.

With his massive win in the Dhumakot bypoll, the BJP has earned an absolute majority with 36 seats in the 70-Member Assembly Maj Gen Khanduri said he had already ordered an inquiry into the industrial scams by a retired IAS officer.

''Several industrial houses had bought land in the state, but were not making use of that. Instead they had just left it in the hope that they might sell it later when its prices shot up. Many were using the land just for packaging while they were manufacturing elsehwere, which was not fair and I called the owners and warned them that it will not be tolerated,'' he said.

So, he added, it was a mispropaganda that industries were leaving the state because of the attitude of the government. ''The Government is only telling the industries not to misuse precious public land. They have to come to the state on our terms,'' he said.

In this connection, he also said his government was not averse to setting up of Special Economic Zones(SEZ).

''We can consider any such proposal if is in the interest of the state,'' he added.
