Khadi employees observe fast for demands

Puducherry, Sept 3(UNI) Employees of the Puducherry Khadi and Village Industries Board today observed a fast in front of the Chief Secretariat here to press their demands.

They were demanding among other things, regularisation of ad-hoc and temperory employees, publication of the seniority list, appointments on compassionate grounds.

Three members of family commit suicide

Kollam, Sep 3(UNI) Three members of a family were found dead on a railway track at Panayam in the district today. Police said they were hailing from the nearby area and allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a speedy train. The deceased were identified as Sasidharan (45), his wife Vasantha (40) and daughter Sari (18). Family problems were said to be the reason for the suicide, he added. UNI.....

Coimbatore, Sep 3 (UNI) Can one imagine, people performing post-funeral rituals to an animal, normally restricted to the departed souls of human beings? Yes, it was done to an elephant by the tribals at Periyanaickam Playam forest range in the Western Ghats, last evening. Such was the love a group of tribals had for an elephant that they performed all the post-funeral rituals with maximum 'religious fervour'. The ashes of the carcass preserved in a pot (urn), poojas were performed.....

C Radhakrishnan conferred 'Padmaprabha Puraskaram'

Kalpatta, Sep 3 (UNI) Eminent Novelist C Radhakrishnan has been chosen for this year's 'Padmaprabha Puraskaram' for his outstanding contribution to Malayalam literature. A committee comprising writers P Valsala, Unnikrishnan Puthur and media personality T N Gopakumar selected Mr Radhakrishnan for the prestigious award instituted by the Padmaprabha Memorial Trust, its Chairman M P Veerendrakumar MP said in a release here today. The Award carried a cash price of Rs 55,000, plaque and a citation. UNI.....

Vizhinjam global tender receives 21 bidders

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 3 (UNI) Kerala Ports Minister M Vijayakumar today said as many as 21 tenders have been received from international companies for the proposed deep-sea container terminal at Vizhinjam, near here, for which the state government had floated a global tender. Bhopal, Sep 3 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Excise Minister Babulal Gaur today disclosed that some of the so-called BJP dissidents had approached him to form a ''separate group'' within the ruling party to ''protect their interests.'' Talking to newspersons here, Mr Gaur, however, said he had refused to oblige them saying that any such act would encourage factionalism and weaken the party and have adverse impact on its prospects in the next year's assembly elections.
