Chief Editor among 5 journos sentenced to jail in defamation case

Lucknow, Sep 3 (UNI) A court today awarded jail terms to three journalists and two publisher-printers for publishing a defamatory article and interview.

Special Chief Judicial Magistrate (customs) Suresh Chandra passed this order after admitting the complaint of senior IAS officer Anant Kumar Singh, the then district magistrate of Muzaffarnagar.

Mr Singh is presently Secretary, Medical Education.

The then journalist Raman Kripal has been sentenced to one year rigourous imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000.

Besides, the then newspaper chief editor Ghanshyam Pankaj; Deepak Mukherjee, the then publisher-printer; A K Bhattacharya, the then executive editor; and Sanjiv Kanwar, the then publisher-printer have been given six months jail term and-Rs 2,000 fine each.

Mr Singh had taken umbrage to the said article and interview, when it was published in the newspaper.

On October 2, 1994, a newspaper had published a defamatory article and interview against the then Muzzafarnagar district magistrate Anant Kumar Singh in connection with the infamous Rampur Tiraha case.

Consumer Forums oppose revision of power tariff

Bangalore, Sep 3 (UNI) Various trade and commerce, consumer forums, farmers and housing societies today opposed the revision of power tariff of Rs 0.99 paise per unit by Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) saying that it would lead to an ''adverse chain reaction'' in their presentation before the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission. A Consumer Care Society representative told the Commission headed by CITU President K P Pande that the BESCOM had shown a surplus of Rs 265 crore and the tariff.....

Tension in Old City; 17 CPI(M) workers injured

Hyderabad, Sept 3 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the old city of the capital as 17 workers of the CPI(M) were today injured as AIMIM workers reportedly pelted stones on them on the third day of the six-day 'Padayatra' of the party MP Madhu, to understand and provide relief to the residents of the poverty-stricken and economically backward area dominated by Muslims. Honour for Pondy teachers

Puducherry, Sep 3 (UNI) Two teachers from this union territory have been selected for the national award for best teachers. Sanarpet Government Primary School Headmaster K Somu and Sinnatha Government Girls Higher secondary School Lecturer S Manivelan were chosen for the honour. Announcing this to the press here this evening, Education Minister M O H F Shajahan said two teachers at the primary level and two at the middle school level were selected for the Dr Radhakrishnan Award while the Chief.....
