Centre sanctions Rs 101 crore for sanitation project in HP

Shimla, Sept 3 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Rural Development Minister Sat Mahajan said projects worth Rs 101 crore have been sanctioned by the centre for the state, which would also contribute a matching share, under the total sanitation campaign guidelines.

Reviewing the performance of total sanitation campaign here, he said Kangra had received the highest allocation of Rs 16.28 crore followed by Rs 14.95 crore for Mandi district.

Mr Mahajan emphasised the need for sustained campaign on education and the importance of propagating the state-level award scheme for panchayats wherein the best panchayats at the state level would be given an award of Rs 10 lakh followed by winners of divisional, district and block panchayats who would be eligible for an award of Rs five lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs one lakh respectively.

He also directed the department to discourage the practice of open defecation and highlight the dangers posed by such defecation to water sources and environment .

Emphasis should not be on physical targets but should be on attitudinal and behavioural change so that the advantages of toilet use in terms of health related goals, conveniences, cleanliness were emphasised, he said.

He also exhorted the department to ensure that regular contact programmes with the panchayats should be maintained and zonal level meetings with Deputy Commissioners, DPOs, DRDA officials and LSEOs held .

Suicide attempt a la ''Sholay''

Fatehabad, Sep 3 (UNI) Apparently taking a cue from the popular suicide bid of Dharmendra in the Bollywood blockbuster Sholay, a sozzled man climbed atop 130-feet-high mobile tower at village Pilimandori in this district early today. It took combined efforts of the police, fire brigade and BSNL officials the whole day to convince Nathu Ram, the 50-year-old village chowkidar, to climb down. According to villagers, Nathu, who had consumed liquor, had a tiff with his wife and stomped off.....

Rs 1795.80 cr spent in Vidarbha from PM's package

Mumbai, Sept 3 (UNI) An amount of Rs 1795.80 cr had so far been spent so far in the six districts of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra from the Prime Minister's special rehabilitation package, announced last year for the uplift of the farmers. The Prime Minister had sanctioned Rs 3750 cr for farmers in Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Buldana, Washim and Wardha, which was to be implemented in three years starting from 2006. Lt Governor directs stringent action against power theft

New Delhi, Sep 3 (UNI) Taking cognizance of the power thefts in domestic as well as industrial premises in certain localities of the capital, Delhi Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna today directed the authorities concerned to take stringent action against such thefts. '' All individuals indulging in such an illegal activity are hereby warned to refrain from carrying out theft of power, failing which they will be subjected to stringent punishment as per the new electricity act of 2003 (amended in 2007),.....
