Autorickshaw strike deferred till September 30

Mumbai, Sep 3 (UNI) The proposed strike called by autorickshaw drivers union against installation of electronic meters and printers in the rickshaws was today deferred till September 30, after an assurance by Maharashtra Minister for Environment Dharmarao Baba Atram.

The strike was scheduled for September 5 and 6 across the state.

Speaking at a news conference here, Union leader Sharad Rao said ''The Minister assured us that a decision will be taken on the issue after consultation with the Chief Minister, and till then the rule will not be implemented.'' He said it is not possible to install electronic meters and printers in the autorickshaws as it is very costly and needs high maintenance.

The autorickshaw drivers plying all over the state are against the rule of installing electronic meters and had planned a strike on September 5 and 6 against the same, he informed.

Mr Rao said that if a favourable decision has not reached till September 30, a strike will be announced pressing for their demands.

Meghalaya police arrest ANLF-A ultra

Shillong, Sept 3 (UNI) Meghalaya police have arrested a militant cadre and a closeaide of A'chik National Liberation Front - A leader Nobin K. Marak alias Mangkram from Dagal area in East Garo Hills district. Waildas N. Sangma, the ultra, was arrested on September 1, police said today. Police, however, did not recover any arms or ammunition from the arrested. Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the militant cadre. UNI.....

Motorcyclist killed in accident

Barrackpore, Sep 03 (UNI) A motorcyclist was killed in a road accident on VIP Road under Lake Town police station in North 24 Parganas district today. Police said the victim, a resident of Jagatpur of Baguiati, died on the spot. The driver, however, fled the spot soon after the incident. Local people put up a road blockade on the VIP Road for an hour. UNI.....

Country's exports up 18% in July

New Delhi, Sep 3 (UNI) Country's exports went up by 18.52 per cent to 12,494.11 million dollars in July-2007 from 10,542.14 million dollars in July 2006. However, in rupee terms, the increase was merely 3.10 per cent to Rs 50,493.57 crore, an official statement said today. Country's imports during July-2007 also registered an increase of 20.40 per cent to 17,508.63 million dollars from 14,542.21 million dollars in July-2006. In rupee terms, the increase was just 4.74 per cent. Oil.....
