Manipur govt to repair state buildings at New Delhi

Imphal, Aug 31 (UNI) Manipur Commerce and Industries Minister Yumkham Erabot has announced that the state government will repair the Manipur Panthoibi Emporium and Manipur Pavilion at New Delhi.

Manipur Information Centre officials here today said the minister took the decision after inspecting the two complexes at New Delhi.

Mr Erabot instructed the engineers of the Manipur Industrial Development Corporation Ltd to start the repair work, the officials added.

The minister was dissatisfied with the existing design of Manipur Pavillion's interior and front view, the officials said.

Mr Erabot said in order to promote and develop Manipur's handloom and handicrafts industry, there should be coordination among other departments which supplied the raw materials, including agriculture and horticulture.

The minister said the state's handloom and handicraft products, including mattresses, bags, wall hangings and hats, were in great demand adding that his department would promote the export of such products.

Israeli rescue forces search for missing sailors

JERUSALEM, Aug 31 (Reuters) Aided by helicopters, Israeli rescue forces searched off the northern port of Haifa today for two sailors from an Israeli freighter that collided with a Cypriot cruise ship. Israeli forces pulled 11 of the 13 crew from the ''Shelly'' cargo vessel out of the sea unharmed after the collision yesterday. Israeli media said they were mostly Indonesian and Ukrainian and were en route to Cyprus. The Israeli freighter sank and officials said.....

Bangladesh freezes ex-PM's bank accounts

Dhaka, Aug 31: Bangladesh's tax authority has asked commercial banks to freeze the accounts of the most recent prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, and 10 family members as part of the army-backed interim government's anti-corruption drive. Family members on the freeze list include Khaleda's younger son Arafat Rahman and his wife and their two daughters, Khaleda's nephew and five other relatives, the National Board of Revenue said in a circular issued to the banks. The NBR has already frozen the bank accounts.....

Australia, India to study free trade pact

Canberra, Aug 31: Australian and India will launch a study on a possible free trade pact between the two countries later this year, Australia's trade minister said on Friday. ''India is a emerging as one of the key drivers for global economic growth and its economic rise will be increasingly critical to world economic development,'' Warren Truss said. ''India's middle class will especially present important opportunities for Australian business. India also stands to benefit from Australia's significant economic strength and competencies.''
