Andhra CM assures justice to rape victims

Hyderabad, Aug 25 (UNI) Nine of the eleven tribal women, who were allegedly raped by police officials at Vakaram village in Visakhapatnam district, today met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy at his camp office and told him about the injustice meted out to them.

After giving them a patient hearing, Dr Reddy told them that he would ensure that justice is done to them.

The women, who arrived by Godavari express, were taken to the Chief Minister by members of the Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samakhya (women's federation).

Meanwhile, Visakhapatnam Superintendent of Police A Sabharwal, said the guilty would not be shielded or allowed to go scot-free at any cost.

A case had been registered under the SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act and the women have been subjected to clinical test.

Goa to allow 5 off-shore casinos to promote tourism: CM

Panaji, Aug 25 (UNI) Justifying his government's decision to issue licences to run off-shore casinos to promote high-end tourism, Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said the state will have five such casinos. ''While one is operating now, five more applications have been received. Whoever comes first, would be given permission to operate -- but a total of only five,'' Mr Kamat told mediapersons here today. The government, he said, was keen to issue licences for running the casinos as it gets.....

3 PP members boycott J

Srinagar, Aug 25 (UNI) Three members of the Panthers Party (PP) today boycotted the proceedings of the Jstate Legislative Assembly, to protest against the refusal to revoke the suspension order of their colleague Harish Dev Singh, for the rest of the session. All the three members -- Balwant Singh Mankotia, Fakir Nath and Yashpal Kundal -- wearing black armbands, were on dharna outside the main gate of the Assembly Hall. Central team assessing the damage due to floods in UP

Lucknow, Aug 25 (UNI) A central team visiting the flood hit areas of the state from thursday today took stock of the damage caused in Eastern parts of the state and assured all possible help from the centre Uttar Pradesh and other logistics. Over a dozen districts of UP are under floods, and the Mayawati government has already asked for Rs 2200 crore for relief measures.
