Rushmi books last 16 berth in singles, through to doubles' quarters

New Delhi, Aug 21 (UNI) Top seed Rushmi Chakravarthi of India moved into pre-quarter-finals of the ITF Women Tennis tournament being played here in Noida, with a tough three set win over unseeded fellow countrymate Parul Goswami in the first round of the 10,000 dollar event.

Rushmi had to face some stiff resistance from Parul before pocketing the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Third seed Tara Iyer also booked her pre-quarter-final berth defeating unseeded Thai girl Sophia Mulsap 6-3 6-2, while eight seed Prerana-Mythri Appineni lost in straight sets 6-1 7-6(4) against fellow Indian Janaki Gunuganti.

Rushmi will now face Kyung-Yee Chae of Korea in the next round, while third seed Tara Iyer will be up against Australian Abby Hedges.

Fouth seed Ankita Bhambri will fight against Jung-Yoon Shin of Korea in the pre-quarters and her sister Sanaa will face fellow Indian Sonal Phadke.

Meanwhile, in the doubles, the top seed Indo-Thai duo of Rushmi-Tangphong defeated unseeded Korean pair of Chae-Shin 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals, where they are up against all Indian combo of Vishika Chhetri and Sonal Phadke.

India's Bhambri sisters also booked their quarter-final slot defeating another sister duo of Chirashanthi Rajur and Anupama Rajur 6-1, 6-4. They will now face Prerana-Mythri Appineni and Archana Venkataraman in the last eight.

Petition seeking early trial of Musharraf moved in Pak SC

Lahore, Apr 15 (ANI): An application has been moved before the Pakistan Supreme Court (SC) for the early hearing of a petition, seeking the trial of former President Pervez Musharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution.Advocate Zahid Malik has also sought the court's directions for the federal government to bar Musharraf from leaving the country.Malik submitted the constitutional petition was of an urgent nature and it should be taken up at the earliest, the Daily Times reported.Petitioner's.....
