Varanasi, Aug 21 (UNI) Corporators of the Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) took to street here today demanding the release of two fellow corporators arrested by police recently in connection with a road hold-up.
Led by Sadhna Vedanti, Rajendra Gandhi, Teju Sonkar (BJP), O P Singh and Hira Yadav (SP) and Shambhunath Batul (Congress), the municipal corporators, cutting across party lines, carried out a protest procession from the VNN against the recent arrest of fellow corporators Manoj Sonkar and Om Prakash Sonkar.
The procession turned into a demonstration on reaching the office of Inspector General of Police (IG-Varanasi Zone) Kashmir Singh.
Since Dr Singh was not present in his office, the angry corporators raised anti-police and anti-district administration slogans.
Efforts by Senior Police Superintendent S B Shirodkar to take the memorandum enlisting demands of the corporators fell flat.
