Andhra Pradesh: CPI to intensify agitation

Hyderabad, Aug 21: The Communist Party of India (CPI) in Andhra Pradesh will intensify its land struggle from tomorrow to press for land to the poor, its State Secretary K Narayana said today.

Talking to reporters here, ahead of his visit to Mudigonda, to pay homage to those killed in police firing along with CPI(M) National General Secretary Prakash Karat, he said the Left parties have decided to step up the struggle to protest against the delay by the state government to concede their demands, including constitution of a Land Commission to look into issues concerning land.

Despite police curbs, he would proceed to Chinaganjam in Prakasam district to lead the struggle by poor people for restoration of over 500 acres of land to a company for salt production, the CPI leader said.

The party state conference would be held in Tirupati from December 19 to 23 to review the party's functioning in the last three years and chalk out agitational programmes.

The CPI would implead in the case before the Supreme Court on the issue of grant of pardon to life convicts, he said, accusing the Government of delaying the release of over 1,600 prisoners for the sake of a Congress leader, whose release had been objected by the apex court.

The party would shortly seek the intervention of the State Human Rights Commission to stop alleged harassment of girijans in Srikakulam district for their supposed links with naxalites, he added.
