Ivanchuck leads jointly with 5 others at Ordix Open

Mainz, Aug 19: Vessely Ivanchuck won the all the 5 rounds in the game to lead jointly with five others on the first day of the two day Ordix Open which began today at Rhinegoldhalle here.

Vesely Ivanchuk won all his 5 games. In the fifth round he fought a long battle against Naiditsch to get the game in his favour.

On the other top table Mamedyarov defeated Drozodovsky to remain a part of the First 6 players. Pentala Harikrishna drew his 5th round game to remain on 4.5 points from 5 games while Sasikiran who won the first three, lost the fourth and finally won the 5th game finishing with 4 points.

''Today I played better than in chess960. I won first four games but due to shortage of time I had to accept a draw from my opponent.

I think 4.5 points from 5 games is a good result and If I can perform as good as I have done today I will certainly have a good position'' Harikrishna told UNI.

India's Wizkid too gave a satisfying performance with 3.5 points from 5 games, while former world women champion Jhu Chen lost her 5th round game to Sergissian and remained on 4 points.

On the 2nd day 6 more games are to be played and and the Championship is still wide open.

This chess tournament is said to be the largest gathering of the chess players with participation of record number of 761 players including 72 Grandmasters from all over the world.

Top players which include Ivanchuck, Shirov, Grischuck, Akopian, Almasy, Sergissian, Mamedyarov, Gata Kamsky, Karjakin, Sasikiran, Harikrishna and World's Youngest Grandmaster India's Parimarjan Negi are taking part in the tournament.

Top Boards Standing after 5 Rounds 1-6 Vessely Ivanchuck, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, V. Akopian,I Khenkin, D Navara and Sergissian all on 5 points.

7- 12 Pentala Harikrishna , Alexander Grischuk, G Meir,K Landa,I Lysij, and A Ilijn on 4.5 points.

Sasikiran finishes in top 10 on day one of Finet Open

Mainz, Aug 17: Indian Grandmasters Krishnan Sasikiran and Pentala Harikrishna scored 4.5 and 4 points from five games respectively on the first day of the FiNet Open at Rhinegoldhalle here. India's second best in the game, Sasi started off with a blaze winning the first three games with ease. He then drew his fourth game against Yusspov, but pocketed the fifth one to score 4.5 point and remain in the top 10. Following Sasi's footsteps, Harikrishna too won his first three games.....

WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) A court-martial will start Monday for a US Army intelligence officer charged with abuses at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, where he headed the interrogation center, the Army said on Saturday. The trial of Lt Col Steven Jordan will be convened at Fort Meade, Maryland, outside Washington, the Army said. Jordan is charged with cruelty and maltreatment of detainees as well as making false statements and obstruction of justice, disobeying a superior officer and failure to obey orders......

KINGSTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) Jamaicans snapped up emergency supplies as Hurricane Dean bore down on their Caribbean island, threatening to become a rare Category 5 storm when it later nears Mexico's Yucatan and the oil rigs of the Gulf of Mexico. The first hurricane of what is expected to be an above-average 2007 Atlantic storm season has already pounded the eastern Caribbean, where it killed at least three people.
