Temple renovated by British couple

Shajapur, MP, Aug 12 (UNI) In the holy month of Shravan, devotees throng to the Baijnath Shiva -- in this district's Aagar -- which was renovated by a British couple in the colonial era.

The shrine, a masterpiece of architecture and sculpture, has an 'amalaka', 'stupika' and 'kalasa' atop its sanctum sanctorum in accordance with the Nagara style. Parmara era embellishments also adorn the temple which was built during that period, according to archaeologists.

Nestled in the Vindhyas, Aagar -- famous for its red soil -- was a beehive of military activity during the British period when it had a cantonment and railway line. In 1882, Colonel Martin -- stationed at the cantonment -- was ordered to proceed to war-ravaged Afghanistan. After several days went by sans news of the officer, his wife heeded locals' advice and vowed that she would have the shrine renovated after the colonel's safe return.

After the officer returned, the couple not only renovated the temple but added a reservoir at the rear.
