Encounter at border areas, one killed

Imphal, Aug 12: A cadre of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) was killed and two other activists of the same outfit were injured in an encounter with Assam Rifles (AR) troops.

The PRO of AR said troops of 10 JKLI and UNLF cadres were locked in a gun battle at the border areas of Manipur's Chandel district yesterday.

The troops had launched the operation from August 10 and it was still continuing, the PRO said.

However, the injured as well as other UNLF cadres managed to escape to Myanmar, the PRO added.

An AK-47 rifle with magazine and 23 rounds, one remote controlled IED and seven normal IEDs and one radio set (wireless) were recovered from the area occupied by the militants.

Police have so far received no information about the incident due to the remoteness of the area.

The PRO said troops of 32 AR apprehended a cadre of People's United Liberation Front (Azad) and was handed over to police yesterday. One hand grenade was recovered from him.
