Pune, Aug 11 (UNI) International sprinter Deepak Basarkar of Pune burnt the Baburao Sanas track to win the 400 meters run at a time of 50.5 seconds and in the process got the better of Mumbai Suburban's Vasant Band on the opening day of the Maharashtra State Junior Inter-Club Athletic Championship that got underway here today.
Vijay Lahange of Thane took the bronze.
Kuldip Bhonge of Pune became the fastest, bagging a gold in the 100 meters sprints in the boys under-18 section stopping the clock at 11.1 seconds. Anirudh Gujar of Satara claimed the silver while Ravindra Tribhuvan of Pune got the bronze.
Earlier 950 athletes from 105 clubs were vying for honours in the three-day meet which also caters to the Pune District championship for men and women simultaneously.
The inter-club championship assumes importance as it would serve as the barometer to select the Maharashtra team to take part in the West Zone athletic championship to be held at IPCL stadium in Baroda on September 8 and 9.
The three-day championship was inaugurated by Maharashtra Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) Vice-President advocate Abhay Chhajed.
He also felicitated the inaugural Jijamata awardee Mrs Manisha Ghate (Kondhalkar), Mr Sumant Waikar who also awarded the Shiv Chhtarapati award for best organiser for the year 2005-2006 and Shriya Vidwans of Thane who represented the country in the World Youth Athletic Championship held at Ostrava in Czech Republic recently.
