Agitated villagers block NH-I at Hamira

Kapurthala, Aug 12 (UNI) A large group of villagers including women staged a dharna on Jalandhar-Amritsar NH-I near Hamira village and blocked vehicular traffic to protest against the alleged forcible possession of a village pond by a woman with the help of the police.

Village Sarpanch Lakhwinder Singh and Block Samiti Member Dr Dalbir Singh who were leading the dharna alleged that one Kamlajit Kaur of Hamira with the help of police forcible took possession of the pond. She used sand bags to hamper the drainage of dirty water of the village into the pond, they claimed.

The villagers removed the sand bags this morning and reported the matter to the police.The police failed to take any action against the encroacher .

Bholath DSP summoned both the parties to the police station at Subhanpur in the evening. However the villagers got agitated when they found that neither the DSP not Kamlajit were present at the police station.

The villagers number about 400 then staged a dharna in the middle of road and blocked the traffic which disrupted traffic. The villagers have not yet lifted the dharna.

35 feared dead due to flash flood in ECL mine

Purulia, Aug 5: At least 35 villagers of Guntigura, who were trapped in an abandoned ECL mine on August 2, are feared dead, offical sources said.The accident occurred when a flash flood swept the mine under Neturia police station area some 250 km west of Kolkata.
