17,500 ltrs of spirit seized; four arrested in TN

Tirunelveli, Aug 6: Police seized 17,500 litres of rectified spirit, worth Rs five lakh, meant to be smuggled to Kerala, and arrested four persons from Kurinjanpatti village near here in this connection this morning.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli range, P Kanappan said that based on a tip-off, a joint police team from Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts raided a poultry farm and seized the spirit, stored in 500 cans.

He said the arrested were identified as Sasikumar, Biju alias Sasi of Punalur in Kerala, Suresh alias Prasad of Kottarakara and Ansar of Thiruvananthapuram. Police were on the look out for the land owner who had leased out his land to the arrested.

He said the arrested used to bring spirit from Bangalore and smuggle it to Kerala via Kanyakumari.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that they were engaged in the illegal business for a long time.
