Visiting German delegation calls on Mah Guv Krishna

Mumbai, Aug 3 (UNI) A German Parliamentary delegation today called on Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna at the Raj Bhawan to discuss India's Federal structure, besides other key areas of interest.

According to a Raj Bhavan communique, Mr Krishna explained to his German guests about the potential that Maharashtra offers in terms of economy, trade and commerce.

''He further spoke about his role as the chancellor of universities in the state and explained to the delegation the functioning of the country's federal structure.'' The German Parliament's (German Bundestag) Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs led by its chairman, Ruprecht Polenz is currently on a visit to India. The delagation is here to study federalism in India and other topics like distribution of powers between the centre and states, devolution of taxes and funding of education etc.

Those who called on the Governor included Eckhart von Klaeden, Parliamentarian and Foreign Policy spokesperson for the Christian Democratic Union Parliamentary Group, Wolfgang Gehrcke, MP, Sylvya Hartlief, Secretary of the Committees on Foreign Affairs of the German Bundestag and the Consul General of Germany in Mumbai, Walter Stechel, the statement added.

Musharraf-Benazir deal will not last: Nawaz

New Delhi, Aug 3: Exiled former Pakistan Premier Nawaz Sharif, who has refused to be a ''dummy prime minister'' under President Pervez Musharraf, says the Musharraf-Benazir deal on pre-election power-sharing will not last. Ashutosh storms into semis

New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) Ashutosh Singh kept the Indian flag flying thrashing Taiwanese qualifier Lin Tzu-Yang in straight sets to storm into the semi-finals of the ITF F7 Futures here. In-form Ashutosh made no-contest of his quarter-final match demolishing Lin 6-2, 6-2 in no time. In the semi-final, Ashutosh faces second seed Yu Wang Jr of China, who snuffed out another Indian hope Aditya Madkekar 6-4, 7-6 (3). Meanwhile, top seed Aqeel Khan of Pakistan was.....

Bush sets global climate meeting for Sept 27-28

WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (Reuters) The Bush administration today unveiled plans for a high-level conference on global warming in September that would bring together the world's biggest polluters to seek agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. US President George W Bush issued invitations to 11 other countries plus the European Union and the United Nations to attend the Sept. 27-28 meeting in Washington intended to work towards setting a long-term goal by 2008 to cut emissions......
