Torrential rains lash Mumbai

Mumbai, Aug 3 (UNI) Torrential rains today lashed several parts of the city and its suburbs, severely disrupting air, rail and road traffic in the metropolis.

The total rainfall recorded in the city for the last 24 hours till 0830 hrs this morning was 104.2 mm at Colaba in south Mumbai and 82.6 mm at Santacruz in north Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the Met office forecast spells of rain or thundershowers with a possibility of heavy falls in parts of the city and suburbs in the next 24 hours accompanied by strong gusty winds.

Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places over greater Mumbai district during the same period.

Suburban rail services on the harbour, western and central lines are running 30 minutes behind schedule as a result of water logging at Kings circle, Vadala, Mahim, Elphinstone road, Parel and Mahalaxmi railway stations.

Road traffic too has been affected due to poor visibility and water logging in several parts on the S V Road linking Bandra to Borivali.

Departure of several flights from Mumbai's Chatrapati Shivaji airport (domestic) has been delayed by almost two hours.

However, the trough of low pressure on sea level chart extending off north Maharashtra coast to Kerala coast persists.

Moderate to rather heavy rainfall is likely to occur at most places over Konkan region and at many places over south central Maharashtra and Marathwada and at a few places over north central Maharashtra.

Heavy rainfall is also likely to occur over Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts during the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at isolated places over Thane district during the the same period.
