K'taka to seek more funds for rural devp: HDK

Bangalore, Aug 3: State will seek more funds from the Center for taking up more rural development works including that of 'Suvarna Grama Yojana' when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visits the city today to review the Agricultural status in Karnataka, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy informed here today.

Speaking to newsmen at Airport, he said that the Center had announced a special package of Rs 2689.64 crore for the six districts in the state, where a large number of farmers committed suicide during last five years.

The Chief Minsiter said that the major component of the Center's special assistance package was relating to various irrigation projects, which can not be implemented immediately unless inter-state river disputes were settled.

However the state would present a memorandum seeking more funds to take up rural development works including that of 'Suvarna Grama Yojane' and other to create infrastructure at the village level.

"During the meeting the state government would also appeal the Dr Singh to take initiative on the proposed and ambitious Rs 25000-crore ONGC project at Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada district".

About the strong demand from the people of the five districts of Hyderabad-Karnataka area, the most backward region in the state, on according special status for development by bringing amendment to Article 371 of the Indian Constitution.

"The issue is unlikely to be raised during the meeting of the Prime Minister," he said.

Cauvery: Complete shutdown of K'taka on Feb 12
