RailTel mulls WiFi technologies in 500 stations

New Delhi, Aug 3: To make Internet and cybercafe more accessible in Railway Stations, RailTel, a subsidiary of Indian Railways is mulling to install advanced WiFi systems at about 500 stations across the country.

These facilities will be first provided in Bangalore Railway Station, which will be operational within the next two-to-three months followed by Jaipur, a statement said.

''Once in operation, the systems will provide Internet and cybercafe facilities not only in stations, but also within at least one-km radius around the station it is installed.'' Railway officials also expect that such facilities will also be possible in the moving trains by erecting towers on the route after two-three years, the statement added.

The Delhi Government is also planning to provide latest Wimax technology, which ensures high-speed Internet access on the move and wireless net access on laptops.

Bangalore is already WiFi enabled, while Pune and Kolkata are fast on their way to attaining the status.
