Prime Minister arrives in Bangalore

Bangalore, Aug 3 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here today on a day's visit to review the agricultural and financial scenario of Karnataka.

He was received at the airport by Governor T N Chaturvedi, Chief Minsiter H D Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, State Congress President Mallikarjuna Kharge and others.

Dr Singh drove down directly to address a meeting of party workers.

Later, he would review the progress made under the Vidharbha type of package and also the agricultural situation and infrastructure sector.

He would be assisted in the meetings by Union Ministers, including Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

The Prime Minister would leave for Delhi in the evening.

Affiliate Cricket Chandigarh, Governor to BCCI

Chandigarh, Aug 3 (UNI) Fresh efforts are being made to get Chandigarh cricketers their due recognition from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. In the latest development, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Union Territory Administrator, General (retd.) S F Rodrigues has written a letter to BCCI president Sharad Pawar, requesting him to grant direct affiliation to Chandigarh for participation in the Board recognised cricket touraments. Nikkei nearly flat as TDK up but banks fall

TOKYO, Aug 3 (Reuters) Japan's Nikkei average ended almost flat on Friday as cellphone makers such as TDK Corp. rose following industry leader Nokia's upbeat earnings results. But bank shares extended gains on renewed concern about the fallout from the U.S. subprime loan problems after news that American Home Mortgage Investment Corp plans to close most operations on Friday, becoming one of the biggest casualties of the U.S. housing downturn. Pak court orders jailed Musharraf critic freed

Islamabad, Aug 3: Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered today the release of a firebrand opposition leader sentenced to life in jail for defaming the army, in another setback to embattled President General Pervez Musharraf.
