One killed, five injured in police firing

Madhubani, Bihar, Aug 3 (UNI) One person was killed and five were injured when police opened fire to quell a violent mob at Chakdah village in the district today.

Police resorted to firing when a lathi-charge failed to disperse rival groups, who clashed over the cutting of an embankment to release huge accumulated rain water in the village.

When police arrived at the spot, the mob turned their wrath on them and pelted stones and others missiles injuring 12 policemen. They also set afire a police jeep destroying it completely.

The police first used a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd, but when that failed, they opened fire killing one of the villagers- Darshanand Thakur- on the spot and injuring five others, all of whom were admitted to a nearby hospital.

Earlier about 50 other villagers also sustained injuries during the clash when stones and other sharp edged weapons used freely.

Soon a strong police contingent arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

District Magistrate Rahul Singh and Superintendent of Police Amrit Raj also rushed to the spot and were still camping there when reports last came in.

However, tension was still prevailing in the area, the sources added.
