One killed and five injured in police firing

Madhubani, Bihar, Aug 3 (UNI) One person was killed and five were injured when police opened fire to quell a violent mob at Chakdah village in the district today.

Police resorted to firing when lathis failed to disperse rival groups, who clashed over the cutting of an embankment to release huge accumulated rain water in the village.

When police arrived at the spot the mob turned their wrath on them and pelted stones and others missiles injuring 12 policemen. They also set afire a police jeep destroying it completely.

The police first used lathi to disperse the crowd, but when that failed they opened fire killing one of the villagers- Darshanand Thakur- on the spot and injuring five others, all of whom were admitted to a nearby hospital.

Earlier about 50 other villagers also sustained injuries during the clash when stones and other sharp cutting weapons used freely.

Soon a strong police contingent arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

District Magistrate Rahul Singh and Superintendent of Police Amrit Raj also rushed to the spot and were still camping there when reports last came in.

However, tension was still prevailing in the area, the sources added.

Centre asks Bihar govt to intensify relief in flood-hit areas

New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh today directed the Bihar Government to intensify relief measures in the flood-affected areas to protect the lives and properties of people. Dr Singh, who will visit the flood-hit areas tomorrow to take stock of the ongoing relief measures, said that readymade food, polythenes for shelter, health care, medicine and boats were provided on a large-scale. Revival of south west monsoon over central India

New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) The current meteorological conditions suggest a revival in monsoon activity over central and adjoining peninsular India, the Met department said today. A low pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal tomorrow along with a southward shift in monsoon trough. The low-pressure area is likely to become more marked and move slowly in a west-northwesterly direction. Enhanced rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rains are likely.....
