Metro Mono Rail system in major cities of Punjab soon: Sukhbir

Jalandhar, Aug 3 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) acting president Sukhbir Singh Badal today said that Metro or Mono Rail system would be introduced in the major cities of Punjab soon.

Addressing mediapersons here this evening, Mr Badal said that RITES, a Government of India enterprise for major projects, had been entrusted the task of conducting survey in major cities for running Metro or Mono Rail system for the convinience of the public.

He said the Metro or Mono Rail would not only run in cities but would also cover nearly 20 km of the surrounding areas of the city.

On the scarcity of electricity, he said Punjab would be power surplus after three years as 6000 Mega Watt electricity would be generated after completion of Mansa, Rajpura, Abohar and Goindwal power projects at the cost of Rs 6500 crore. Not only this, but after three years, the government would generate revenue by selling excess electricty to other states, he added.

For the common man, who cannot afford to travel in AC vehicles, the government has decided to convert its fleet of non-AC buses to AC, he said adding that in the first year 30 per cent of the buses would be converted to AC, next year again, 30 per cent of the buses would be converted to AC. The ticket fare would not be hiked as the cost of running AC buses would be compensated by lowering the taxes, he said.

On the condition of bus stands, he said that bus stands would be converted into major business hubs by building multi-storyed AC complexes fitted with elevators and other modern facilities.

With the expansion and setting up of new airports and increase in flights, more pilots would be needed, for this, he said many more fying clubs would be set up in the state in joint venture with private players to produce at least 1000 pilots every year from Punjab.
