Kolkata's St James enters next round of inter-school debate

Jamshepdur, Aug 03 (UNI) Kolkata's St James School today qualified to next round of Frank Anthony Memorial All India Inter-School Debate Competition 2007 at the Narbheram Hansraj English School (NHES) here.

Altogether six leading schools including three each from Kolkata and here had participated in the debate with the motion ''In today's rat race-Human being losses out the finer things in life.'' Six students from Kolkata's The Heritage, St James and La Martiniere and same number from Gulmohur High, Hill Top and Little Flower School of here engaged in an entertaining debate for and against the motion.

St James' School team consisting of Sourav Chakravorty and Vedanta Munshi got better over Jamshedpur's Hill Top School represented by Tania Sengupta and Swati Singh.

Munshi was also adjuged the best speaker of the debate by the three-member panel of the judges.

NHES had hosted the competition for the first time.

CCA approves two key appointments

New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) The Cabinet Committee on Appointments has extended the tenure of Mr Sundeep Khanna, additional secretary in the ministry of social justice and empowerment till March 2008, according to an official statement issued today. Meanwhile, Ms Renuka Viswanathan, secretary for coordinationa and public grievances in the cabinet secretariat, will hold additional charge as chairperson at the National Authority for Weapons Convention, the statement added. Meerut-Haridwar highway closed to facilitate 'Kanwariyas'

Muzaffarnagar, Aug 3 (UNI) The Meerut-Haridwar National Highway has been closed till August 11 for security of 'Kanwariyas', who bring sacred ganga water from Haridwar for the 'jal abhishek' of lord Shiva every year. Police said today the vehicular traffic at Meerut-Roorkee, Muzaffarnagar-Saharanpur and Panipat-Muzaffarnagar route had been diverted. This was the temporary arrangement and traffic would be resumed on August 12 after the 'jal abhishek' of Lord Shiva, they added. UNI.....
