Kazi's last rites completed with state honours

Gangtok, Aug 3 (UNI) The last rites of former Sikkim chief minister Kazi Lhendup Dorji Khangserpa were completed with full state honours today at Rumtek in East Sikkim.

Late Mr Kazi was a forerunner in establishing democracy in Sikkim and had been instrumental in the state's merger with the Indian Union.

He expired at his Kalimpong residence on July 28. He was elected as the first chief minister of Sikkim during 1974-79.

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, his cabinet colleagues, the state assembly speaker, former chief ministers, MLAs, representatives from the 17th Mountain Division of the Army and a host of other dignitaries gathered at the Old Rumtek Monastery to pay their last respects. Besides, people from all parts of the state had gathered to pay their last tributes.

Mr Kazi had begun his monastic life from the Old Rumtek Monastery.

A 21-gun salute was conferred by Sikkim Armed Police and the monks performed elaborate prayers during the funeral.

State government declared a holiday today and all schools, educational institutions and business establishments in Gangtok remained closed.

Priya Dutt calls on Sonia to discuss Sanjay Dutt

New Delhi, Aug 3: Ms Priya Dutt, Lok Sabha MP and sister of Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, today called on Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Libya close to buying missiles from EADS, others
