'Jellygate' was a small incident: Monty Panesar

London, Aug 3 (UNI) It might have cost England the match but for Monty Panesar, the ''jellygate'' episode, which provoked a sleeping giant in Zaheer Khan in the second Test at Trent Bridge, is nothing but a ''small incident''.

''I think it is probably a bit misinterpreted in terms of a person doing it. It was maybe accidental or maybe a mistake at the drinks interval,'' Panesar told BBC Radio Live Five.

''I don't think it was anyone's intention to do anything as purposeful as that.

''It was probably a small incident. In cricket or any sport you try to be competitive but what was important was the game was played in the right spirit,'' the 'Sikh of Tweak' added.

The second Test saw tempers flared up after Zaheer complained that a jellybean was placed in front of him while he was batting.

After the batsman removed it, the bean reappeared again.

Incensed by the jape, Zaheer brandished his bat towards Kevin Pietersen in the slip cordon thinking that KP was behind the prank.

Later after demolishing the England batting in the second essay to pave the way for an India win, Zaheer admitted it was the 'insult' that unleashed the beast within.

Meanwhile, Panesar believed that England still had chance to comeback and level the series.

''We fought well in the second innings and we hope to take that into the third Test (at Oval).

''We have got a positive spirit. In the first Test we were only one wicket away from winning the game and hopefully we can take that momentum into the next game.'' UNI
