Heavy rains lash parts of K'taka

Bangalore, Aug 3 (UNI) Heavy rains lashing Coastal and South Interior Karnataka since last night disrupted disrupting normal life.

Reports said heavy rainfall was experienced in Uttara Kannada (UK), Udupi, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Shimoga and Dakshina Kannada districts.

Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada received a record 39 cm of rain during the last 24 hours till 0830 hrs today. The other stations that recorded very heavy rainfall included Shirali 16cm, Kumta 15cm, Honavar 13cm, Kollur, Ankola 11cm each, Karwar, Hosanagar, Agumbe 10cm each.

However, no loss of life or major damage to property was reported.

IMD local office warned that heavy to very heavy rain was likely at a few places over Coastal Karnataka during the next 48 hours.

Heavy rain would also occur at isolated places over ghat regions of South Interior Karnataka during the same period.

The farmers weather bulletin said moderate to rather heavy rain was likely to occur at most places over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Kodagu, Hassan districts.

One killed and five injured in police firing

Madhubani, Bihar, Aug 3 (UNI) One person was killed and five were injured when police opened fire to quell a violent mob at Chakdah village in the district today. Police resorted to firing when lathis failed to disperse rival groups, who clashed over the cutting of an embankment to release huge accumulated rain water in the village. When police arrived at the spot the mob turned their wrath on them and pelted stones and others missiles.....

Naveen rules out enhancement of retirement age for employees

Bhubaneswar, Aug 2 (UNI) Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today ruled out any enhancement of retirement age of the government employees from 58 years to 60 years. Mr.Patnaik made it clear that the proposal was not under consideration of the government but hinted that other demands of the employees would be taken up for consideration in course of time. Tata Steel acquires 35% in Riversdale's coal project for Rs 345 cr

New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) Tata Steel Ltd today said it has acquired 35 per cent stake in Australia-based Riversdale's coal project for Rs 345 crore. Riversdale Mining Ltd and Tata Steel have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU), whereby the company will become a strategic investor in Riversdale's Mozambique Coal project, it said in a statement.
