Fire at former HMV factory

Barrackpore, Aug 3 (UNI) A substantial quantum cassette, musical programming articles, and documents of Saregama company were gutted in a fire that broke out today in its godown at Dum Dum factory, about 15 kms north of Kolkata.

Five fire tenders along a pair of portable pumps were used to douse the fire after three hours fighting this morning, Fire Brigade sources said.

The fire broke out early morning at the godown's 9000 sq. feet area, which was was full of inflammable articles. The godown was of 30 ft high with asbestos roof, Fire Brigade sources said, but they could not tell whether such a godown was equipped with a minimum firefighting arrangement at the godown.

The firemen used two portable pumps connecting to a pond inside the company, former His Master Voice (HMV) Factory complex, after five fire tenders failed to douse the leaping flames.

However, no casualty was reported from this incident, fire brigade sources added.

Elsewhere, another fire broke out in a school kitchen at Michalenagar spoiling mid-day meal of about 80 students being cooked today. The incident occurred at Sahara Vidyabhawan in Michale Nagar of Madhyamgram area in North 24 Parganas.

The fire broke out from leaking gas cylinder.

There was no casualty in the school fire, firemen said.

Train service extended

Bangalore, Aug 3 (UNI) The South Western Railway (SWR) today announced extension by one month the running of Gorakhpur- Yeswantapur-Gorakhpur weekly special. According to a SWR release here, the service would leave Gorakhpur on Mondays and arrive in Yeswantapur on Wednesdays. The service would be operated from August 6. In the return direction, the train would leave Yeswantapur on Thursdays and arrive in Gorakhpur on Saturdays, the release added. UNI.....

Traders vow to continue strike against amendment to APMC Act
