Death sentence in Beant case 'unfortunate': SGPC

Amritsar, Aug 3 (UNI) Reacting to the death sentence awarded to Babbar Khalsa terrorists Jagtar Singh Hawara and Balwant Singh in the Beant Singh assassination case, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandik Committee (SGPC) termed the decision of the Special CBI Court as "unfortnate".

" The judge should have considered the circustances that led to the crime", SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar in a statement here today.

"Sikh sentiments had been hurt due to 'Operation Bluestar' and the massacre of a large nu,ber of members of the community in the anti-Sikh riots of 1984", the statement said and added that the two (terrorists) had no personel enmity against former chief minister Beant Singh. " They acted as their sentiments had been hurt", the statement said.

Advocating repealing of the death sentence, the statement said a number of countries had done away with capital punishment and India should follow suite. The statement also pointed out that so far no one responsible for the anti-Sikh had been punished.

Death toll due to gastroentertis rises to two

Gulbarga, Aug 3 (UNI) The death toll due to gastroentertis in Kakere village in the district has risen to two today with the death of a Gram Panchayat member. The condition of seven persons was stated to be critical. As many as 250 people developed vomiting sensation on August one due to drinking of contaminated water. Ex-ICDP officer gets jail

Hoshangabad, MP, Aug 3 (UNI) A local court today sentenced the then Integrated Child Development Project officer to three years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 for cheating. Judicial Magistrate Deepali Sharma awarded the punishment to Ramila Javde who, according to prosecution, siphoned off money during her posting in this district's Babai about 15 years back after making bogus appointments of anganwadi workers and also underpaid genuine workers. MP records hike in revenue earning

Bhopal, Aug 3 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh registered an increase of about 25 per cent in total revenue receipts in 2006-07 (Rs 25,694 crore) compared to 2005-06 (Rs 20,597 crore), official sources said. The previous fiscal registered a 10.36 per cent decline in non-plan expenditure and a 32.94 per cent increase in plan expenditure. Total receipts in 2006-07 were 9.43 per cent higher than the budget estimate. Tax earning stood at Rs 18,562 crore, 20 per cent higher.....
