CPI(M) against pvt management of Corpn community halls

Chennai, Aug 3 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) today urged Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to direct the Chennai Corporation to change its decision to hand over to private parties, the management of Corporation community halls in the city.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was made available to the media, CPI(M) State Secretary N Varadarajan said that as the halls were widely used by the poor and middle class people for their social and family functions, they should not be entrusted with private parties.

He said the CPI(M) and other parties had opposed a resolution to this effect, passed in the recent Corporation Council meeting, but Mayor M Subramanian went ahead with the decision, stating that the community halls were misused by anti-social elements and stressed the need for the management to be handed over to private parties.

When there was a need for more such halls and developing the facilities in the existing halls, it was not proper on the part of the Corporation to hand over the management to private parties, Mr Varadarajan said, seeking Mr Karunanidhi's intervention.
