BT Cotton cultivation starts in Bengal: Agri Minister

Kolkata, Aug 3 (UNI) The cultivation of Monsanto's BT cotton in Vidarbha, which resulted in disaster last year killing more than 540 farmers, is now making silent entry to Bengal.

The cultivation of Monsanto's BT cotton in Vidarbha--the main cotton growing belt of Maharashtra resulted in disaster. Literally hundreds of farmers committed suicide due to total failure of the Bt cotton crop and their resulting debts.

Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a seminar on "Agri-biotechnology: Opportunities&Challanges" organised by ASSOCHAM, West Bengal Minister Agriculture Minister Naren Dey said,''We have started BT Cotton field trail.'' When asked about BT Cotton cultivation in the state, Agriculture Secretary Atanu Purakayashta said there is no bar on cotton cultivation.

''The Bengal government is increasing cotton cultivation from 500 to 5,000 hecatres by the end of the 11th plan period,'' he said.

Member Secretary and Advisor to Department of Biotechnology, under government of India, Dr KK Tripathi said, ''The biotechnological application can bring about a lot of scientific challanges in front of us.'' UNI

SAAG revenues up 26 %

Chennai, Aug 3 (UNI) SAAG RR Infra Limited, a subsidiary of the Malaysian-based SAAG Consolidated, has registered total income of Rs 1,152 lakh for the quarter ended June 2007, an increase of 26 per cent over the total income for similar period in the last fiscal. Profit after tax for Q1 FY 2007 stood at Rs 81.22 lakh, a company release here today said. Meanwhile, Mr C A V Sivakumar, a chartered account, has joined the board.....

Rupee ends firm at 40.34/35 per dollar

Mumbai, Aug 3: Rupee climbed by nearly 8 paise today to end the trade at 40.34/35 per dollar as compared to the previous close of 40.42/43 per dollar taking a cue from the investor expectations that resulted in stronger inflows to equities. Sensex gained for the second consecutive day and ended the day up by 152.70 points today at 15,138.40. In the morning, Rupee opened at 40.37/38 per dollar and touched a day's high.....

Silver closes higher, Gold down

Mumbai, Aug 3 (UNI) A mixed trend was seen in the precious metals today with Silver gaining by Rs 25 per kg on strong global advice, even as Gold came down by Rs 20 per ten gms on lack of fresh ornament makers demand in view of bearish advice from global and upcountry markets, traders at the Bombay Bullion Association said.
