Motion against B'lore DD Director referred to Privilege Panel

Bangalore, Aug 2 (UNI) Karnataka Legislative Council referred to the Privilege Committee, a privilege motion against Bangalore Doordarshan Director Mahesh Joshi moved by Congress Member V S Ugrappa today.

Earlier, Mr Ugrappa alleged Mr Joshi had referred his name in his petition filed before Advocate General against Lok Sabha Member R L Jalappa over a statement he made in the House on the live coverage of the proceedings.

The DD Director had alleged in his petition that he had raised the issue of live coverage of the proceedings as instigated and influenced by Mr Jalappa.

''The allegation by Mr Joshi was nothing but questioning my privilege and I am not the one who can be influenced by anybody.

''Mr Joshi, by making such allegation has committed a blunder and the matter should be referred to the Privilege Committee,'' he added.

Mr V R Sudarshan (Cong), Mr Channaveera Kanavi (Ind) and Mr Nadagouda (JD) supported Mr Ugrappa and demanded the Chair to refer the matter to the Privilege Committee.

Dutt reaches Yerawada Jail in Pune

Pune, Aug 2 (UNI) Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt reached Yerawada Jail here tonight to serve a six year term of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for keeping illegal weapons. Dutt arrived at 2235 hrs from Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail under heavy police escort. He left the Metropolis at around 1830 hrs. Looking tired and dispirited, he was immediately taken inside the compound. On the way to Pune, Sanjay's girlfriend Maanyata and his other friends followed the police escort.....

Approval of boosted UN role in Iraq looks likely

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 2 (Reuters) Russia signaled its assent today to a US-British draft resolution that would expand the political role of the United Nations in Iraq, making its approval by the Security Council almost certain. Russia, Georgia fail to resume air link cut by row

TBILISI, Aug 2 (Reuters) Georgia and Russia have not resumed passenger flights cut last autumn between Tbilisi and Moscow, a Russian diplomat said today, despite previous assurances that the problem was just a temporary hitch. Russia cut air, sea and postal links with its small Caucasus neighbour last October amid a spying row which brought Moscow's ties with pro-Western Tbilisi to an all-time low.
