Dell delivers first 'Made in India' desktop

Chennai, July 30: Leading computer manfacturer Dell today announced commencement of production at its new facility at Sriperumbudur, near here.

Speaking to the press after handing over the first 'Made in India' desktop to Mr R N Kaushik, Assistant Vice President of Infosys, one of Dell's largest consumers in India, Dell India General Manager Rajan Anand said ''current and future customers in India will be the beneficiaries of this manufacuturing plant as we help simplify information technology for them.

''The Chennai operation reaffirms the strategic importance of India to Dell, providing significant impetus to our growth plans and prospects here, where we are already the fastest growing computer system makers.'' After formally selecting the Chennai site in September 2006, Dell commenced building the plant three months later, he said, adding the facility marked an important beginning not only in the company's local manufacturing abilities but in attracting companies that made up its supply base and typically followed the company to new locations.

The Sriperumbudur plant was the company's third manufacturing location in its Asia-Pacific and Japan region and part of Dell's network of manufactuing facilities.

Earlier this year, Dell commenced manufacturing at its new facility in Brazil and another will be opened in Poland later this year, he said.

Mr Anand also praised the Tamil Nadu and Union Government's for the role in making the venture a success.

He said, ''we are very appreciative of the forward-looking and pro-business approach of the government both in state administration and Union IT Ministry.'' Reaching this milestone in just eight months is both credit to the people of Dell, the state and local officials of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Union IT Ministry.

Located on a 50-acre site with a planned five-year investment of about 30 million dollar, Dell expects initial production for the Chennai operation of four lakh desktops annually.
