Chennai, July 27 (UNI) Opposition AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today condemned the DMK Government for arresting party platform speakers for criticising the Government and charged it with suppressing freedom of speech.
In a statement here, she said that in a democratic set up, the Opposition should be allowed to air its views about the functioning of the Government and bring to light various ''omissions and commissions'' of the ruling party, but this was not possible in the DMK regime.
Unable to accept criticisms, the DMK Government had arrested six AIADMK platform speakers and foisted cases against them for addressing public meetings, organised by the party to protest the ''anti-people'' policies of the Government, Ms Jayalalithaa said.
Pointing out that cases were registered against all the six partymen and remanded to custody, she said party platform speakers could not be cowed down by such threats. If the Government continued such ''oppressive'' attitude, the people would soon teach it a lesson, she warned.
