Left meet PM to discuss Vice-Presidential candidate

New Delhi, July 20: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and party polit bureau member Sitaram Yechuri met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh late last evening to discuss the Vice-Presidential candidate.

Mr Yechuri told sources that the aim of the meeting was to update Dr Singh about the views of the Left parties on Vice-Presidential candidate.

Earlier, the Left parties met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to discuss on the canditate, for which Mr Yechuri said, they had shortlisted four names left-leaning historian Irfan Habib, Jamia Milia Islamia VC Mushirul Hasan, former Indian ambassador to the US Abid Hussain, Haryana Governor A R Kidwai and Mr Khalid Ansari.

Mr Yechuri also did not ruled out former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farukh Abdullah's name from the list of potential canditates.

Cross-voting inflated Ansari's victory edge

New Delhi, Aug 11: The victory margin of the ruling UPA-Left's candidate Hamid Ansari in the Vice Presidential polls got inflated by a substantial amount of cross voting in his favour.Ansari who was expected to secure 425 votes from the Members of the Parliament finally ended up with 455 votes in his favour, thirty more than the expected tally.BJP-led NDA's candidate Najma Heptullah, who was closely associated with the Congress party for over three decades before joining.....
