Seven debt-ridden farmers commits suicide in Vidarbha

Nagpur, July 19 (UNI) Seven debt-ridden farmers have committed suicide in the last 24 hours in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, according to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation.

The seven farmers, who ended their lives included three each from Akola and Buldhana districts and one from Amravati district.

Earlier, eight farmers had committed suicide at various places in the region over the past three days, taking the number during the week to 15, a VJAS press release here said.

The number of farmers who have ended their lives in 2007 has touched 513, the press release said. These included 70 in January, 86 in February, 82 in March, 90 in April, 79 in May, 68 in June and 38 in July, it said.

VJAS said there have been 133 suicides in Yavatmal district, 86 in Amravati, 62 in Akola, 76 in Washim, 57 in Buldhana, 41 in Wardha, 13 in Nagpur, 18 in Bhandara, 17 in Chandrapur, 5 in Gadchiroli and 5 in Gondia.
