Red Army retain Inter Services hockey trophy

Chandigarh, July 19 (UNI) Army Red maintained their monopoly by winning the trophy for the fifth time in a row after outplaying their tradition rivals Indian Air Force 4-0 in the final of the 55th edition of the Inter- Services Hockey Championship at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium.

The Indian Air Force players were totally out of form today.

Barring two chances in the closing stages of the game, the airmen were forced to defend their goal with the Army Red, marshalled by Olympian Ignatius Tirkey, repeatedly raiding their rivals goal.

The Air Force's best move was when Shanawaj Alam gave a through defence-splitting pass to Lovepreet inside the striking circle.

With only advancing Army Red goalkeeper P T Roa at his mercy, Lovepreet fumbled at the eleventh hour and missed the golden opportunity. Earlier, in a move initiated by Prabhakar, Lovepreet dived forward in vain to connect.

Army Red meant business from the word go. They did not take much time to forge ahead. As the match was six minutes old, A K Majhi took a reverse shot from the left flank and hardworking Chittranjan Singh caught Air Force goalkeeper K Vishnu on the wrong foot as he deftly rolled the ball over the goalline.

A combined move among Majhi, Chittranjan Singh and Anil Ekkar saw the last named scoring a brilliant goal in the 17 th minute.

After wasting their first penalty corner in the 23rd minute, Army Red converted their second penalty corner in the 26th minute.

Chittranjan Singh pushed the ball for Maghi to stop and executioner Sunil Ekka perfectly rolled the ball into the goal.

Army Red were awarded their seventh penalty corner in the 56th minute. Chittranjan was the pusher and Majhi stopped it for D Mahadik to score with a gentle but well directed drag-flick.

Earlier, Army Green defeated Indian Navy by 2-1 in a match to decide the third and fourth positions.

Lt Gen Daljeet, GOC-in-C, Western Command, distributed the prizes.

Lt Gen A N Aul, Chief of Staff, Headquarters, Western Command and Air Commodore, R K Srivastava , AOC, 3 BRD (Base Repair Depot) Air Force were also present on the occasion.
