Monsoon remains subdued in most areas in plains

Chandigarh, July 19 (UNI) Monsoon remained subdued in most areas of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Union Territory even as parts of Himachal Pradesh experienced light to moderate rain since last night.

Barring few areas in Punjab, a dry spell continued in the plains following erratic monsoon in the region, leading to hot and humid weather conditions.

In Punjab, moderate rain pounded Ranjit Sagar Dam site recording 26.0 mm, followed by Shahpur Kandi measuring 2.0 mm downpour overnight.

A dry spell also continued in Haryana and Chandigarh Union Territory with no report of rain received from anywhere from the area.

Even as lull in rainfall activity continued in Haryana and Chandigarh, certain areas in Himachal Pradesh received moderate downpour overnight. Gamroor recorded 10.4 mm, Nagrota Surian 4.5 mm, Pandoh 2.5 mm and Guler 1.2 mm rain till 0830 hours. However, rain eluded Shimla which remained drapped in monsoon clouds.

Parts of Jammu and Kashmir were also lashed by rainfall with Bhasoli recording 37.0 mm and Patti 3.2 mm.

Hot and humid weather conditions prevailed in Chandigarh which also went without rains for the third day today.

The Weather Office said light to moderate rain or thundershowers may occur at few places in Himachal Pradesh and isolated places in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours.

Farmers to get adequate power supply for irrigation

Patna, Aug 23:  Admitting an emergent situation before the state due to scanty rainfall Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced to supply power to the drought-hit areas on priority basis for irrigation purpose.Mr Kumar cautioned Patnaites to remain prepared to face more load shedding, including in VIP areas, as power supply would be diverted to rural areas to save crops. He said here last night that load shedding would be for a minimum of two hours every day in.....
