Former Panchayat officer gets 14-year rigorous imprisonment

Thrissur, July 19 (UNI) Former Executive Officer of Upputhara Panchayat P K Sasidharan was sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment by the Vigilance Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge for misappropriating panchayat fund here today.

Special Judge P Q Berkkathali also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 on him.

Mr Sasidharan, a native of Kottayam, was accused of misappropriating around Rs 70,000 earmarked for the construction of a cultural centre.

Pondy: Muncipality employees arrested

Puducherry, June 7: About 200 members of the Federation of Municipality and Commune Panchayat Employees Association were arrested today when they attempted to picket the Chief Secretariat to press their demands. The employees, who were carrying out a series of agitations, were demanding, among other things, converting them into government employees, promotion and removal of pay anomalies. UNI.....

Sonia, PM to address Panchayat rally in Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 30: A national convention and a rally of Chairpersons of District and Intermediate Panchayats will be held here on December 22 and 23 to commemorate the 15th year of passing of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment by Parliament and create awareness among the elected representatives of such bodies of their rights and duties to function as Local Self Government. The convention will be held on December 22 and the rally the next day. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA.....
