Tight security for PM's visit to Jammu on Jul 15

Jammu, July 14: The City of Temples was virtually changed into a fortress today on the eve of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit.

Dr Singh, who was scheduled to receive the Honorary Doctor of Letters on July 10 from the University of Jammu, had deferred his visit following the state mourning for former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar's death.

Army troops conducted the ''area domination'' exercise in the campus area today, while the Special Protection Group (SPG) commandos have again taken over the control of the General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, where Dr Singh will be conferred the degree at a special convocation.

Multi-tier security arrangements have been made to ensure "foolproof arrangements" ahead of Dr Singh's arrival, where the outer layers are being manned by the Army, CRPF and the police.

The varsity campus has been sanitised using metal detectors and sniffer dogs while it has been made an 'out of bound' area for the masses.

The Chancellor of the Jammu University, Governor Lt Gen S K Sinha (Retd), Pro-Chancellor and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will also be present during the special convocation.
