Reputed economist Arvind Virmani appointed CEA

New Delhi, JulY 13 (UNI) Dr Arvind Virmani, Principal Adviser in the Planning Commision, was today appointed Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) in the Union Ministry of Finance.

An economist of repute having headed one of the premier research Institutes of the country-- Indian Council for Research in International Economic Relations (ICRIER), Dr Virmani will be holding the post of the CEA for the second time. He was the acting CEA during the year 2000.

Dr Virmani, has been working as the Principal Adviser in the Planning Commission since January, 2006. His appointment as the CEA relates to the Finance Ministry's Economic Affairs Department.

Dr Virmani succeeds Dr Ashok Lahiri, who is to take over as India's Executive Director on the Board of Asian Development Bank.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Dr Virmani's new post.

Dr Virmani did his Phd in Economics in 1975 from the prestigious Harvard University, United States, under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Kenneth Arrow.

He did his masters in Economics (1973) also from Harvard, but is an Engineering Graduate from California Institute of Technology, United States.

A product of Doon School, Dr Virmani did his BSc (Hons) in Physics from St Stephen's College, Delhi University.

Dr Virmani has been in and out of the Planning Commission holding important assignments. Between 1987 to 1991, he served as Economic Adviser (Perspective Planning Division) and Adviser (International Economics).

Between 2001 and 2002, Dr Virmani was also an Adviser in the Planning Commission.

Dr Virmani was Senior Economic Adviser in the Finance Ministry between 1997 to 2001.

At ICRIER, an organisation dedicated to promoting research in international economics, Dr Virmani was Director and its Chief Executive.

Some of the other important assignments held by Dr Virmani include--- Chairman, Board of Trustees, SBI Mutual Fund; Director, Life Insuarnce Corporation; Member of Board, Centre for Policy Research, member, TRAI, Director in PNB and Allahabad Bank.

Dr Virmani has taught at Harvard and had a stint in the World Bank from 1980 to 1987.
