Monsoon vigorous over Karnataka. Kottigehara receives 16 cm rain

Bangalore, July 9 (UNI) Following is a summary of observations recorded by the Weather Office here at 0830hrs today.

Monsoon was vigorous over South Interior Karnataka and active over Coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka.

Very heavy rainfall amounts (cm): Kottigehara 16, Kammardi 14, Sirsi 13.

Heavy rainfall amounts (cm) : Kiravatti, Yellapura 12 each, Linganamakki, Sringeri 11 each, Dharmasthala, Banavasi, Bhagamandala Humchadakatte, Sakleshpura 10 each. Jayapura 9, Karkala, Belgaum AP, Dharwad, Koppa, Ballupet 8 each. Mudibidre, Mani, Kollur, Shiralkoppa 7 each.

Other chief rainfall amounts (cm): Mundagod, Haliyal, Madikeri, Balehonnur, N.R.Pura, Mangalore AP, Shiggaon, Bailhongal, Talaguppa, Tyagarthi, Anavatti 5 each. Mulki, Panambur, Puttur, Subramanya, Shirali, Guttal, Ranebennur, Madapura 4 each.

Kundapur, Bhatkal, Byadgi, Haveri, Somwarpet, Hassan 3 each.

Forecast valid until Wednesday morning: Rain/thundershowers likely to occur at most places over Coastal Karnataka and at many places over Interior Karnataka.

Farmers Weather Bulletin: Moderate to rather heavy rain likely to occur at most places over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada districts, at many places over Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Shimoga, Haveri, Belgaum, Dharwad districts. Light to moderate rain likely to occur at many places over remaining districts of the State.

Heavy rainfall warning: Heavy to very heavy rain may occur at isolated places over Coastal Karnataka and ghat areas of Interior Karnataka during next 48 hours.

Fisheries warning: Strong onshore winds from westerly direction speed occasionally reaching forty five to fifty five kmph likely along off Karnataka coast during next 24 hours.

Local forecast: Generally cloudy. One or two spells of light rain likely. Surface winds will be strong and gusty at times.

Qualcomm-Tata Teleservices launch Fisher Friend

New Delhi, Aug 2: Aimed at helping the fishermen community, Qualcomm today launched a new BREW-based mobile application, Fisher Friend, which will provide information about the weather, risks, opportunities and market information in local languages. Developed in collaboration with Tata Teleservices, Astute System Technology and M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), ''the application is currently under trial on the Tata Teleservices network in Tamil Nadu and will later be extended to other coastal areas,'' said.....
