Minister denies cholera outbreak in TN capital

Chennai, July 9 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Health Minister K K S S R Ramachandran today denied reports of cholera outbreak in the city Speaking to reporters after giving away certificates of admission to 10 meritorious students in the medical counselling being held at the Directorate of Medical Education here, Mr Ramachandran said about 161 patients got admitted in June, and 183 this month in the Communicable Disease Hospital at Tondiarpet.

''These patients are being treated at the hospital for diarrhoea and vomiting and not for cholera as reported in a section of the media,'' he added.

As many as 561 patients were admitted with cholera during June and July last year, Mr Ramachandran said the municipal Corporation had taken enough precautionary steps to prevent cholera outbreak in the state.

Along with the Chennai Mayor M Subramanian, he inspected the affected areas and met patients admitted in the hospital.

Mr Ramachandran said he would hold a review meeting along with the Local Administration Minister M K Stalin tomorrow to take stock of the situation and discuss the steps to be taken, to control any outbreak of water-borne and vector-borne diseases in the state.

As many as 12,954 students had applied for counselling. But only a total of 1,398 seats were available in 14 Government Medical Colleges in the state. Apart from this, 247 seats will be filled through All India Quota.

No consular access to indians in Pak jail: Pranab

New Delhi, Mar 14:  The government today informed the Lok Sabha that at least 92 Indian civilian prisoners in Pakistani jails have yet not been given consular access."Besides 390 fishermen and 149 civilian prisoners and 74 PoWs are still languishing in Pakistani jails," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in a written reply.The minister was asked whether the government had any reports of inhuman treatment meted out to Indian prisoners in Paksitan.The minsiter said Indian prisoners released by Pakistan had reported.....
