Kashmir highway reopens for both ways

Srinagar, July 9: The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which was closed due to landslides and shooting of stones, was put through for both ways today.

A traffic police official told the sources that one-way traffic resumed yesterday afternoon and all the vehicles, including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims were allowed to proceed to here from Jammu.

Today traffic from Jammu and Srinagar has been allowed as the highway was through, he said.

Yesterday, Amarnath pilgrims had to return to Jammu and Udhampur after landslides, triggered by heavy rains, blocked the highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with rest of the country.

However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, put into service hundreds of workers and sophisticated machines to clear the stones from the road to make it traffic worthy.

Hundreds of trucks, loaded with essential commodities were on way to Kashmir, officials said.
