Flood claims 16 lives, affects one million people in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Jul 9 (UNI) The flash floods caused by torrential rains in Balasore and Bhadrak districts of Orissa have so far claimed 16 lives and affected over a million people, official sources said here today.

Balasore district, worst affected by the flood alone claimed 13 lives while three deaths were reported to have occurred in Bhadrak district.

According to Balasore District Collector Dr Alekh Chandra Padihary, six people died in Jaleswar, four in Bhograi, two in Baliapal and one in Basta area of the district.

The state government had announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the kins of each person, who lost their life in the flood fury.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik made an aerial survey of the flood affected areas of Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts yesterday to take stock of the situation.
