Father sells his son to meet his wife's funeral expenses

Kendrapada,Jul 9 (UNI) In a tragic incident a poor tribal of Jajpur district sold his day-old son to a neighbour to meet the funeral expenses of his wife.

According to police sources, 30-year-old Bipin Gagarai alias Dumbi, of Sahapur in Jajpur district was eking out his living by working as a daily labourer at Markat Nagar in Cuttack.

His wife Gurubari gave birth to a child last Sunday. After the delivery her health deteriorated and she died the next day.

Despite his best efforts Bipin could not arrange money to hire a vehicle to take his wife's body to his village and perform the last rites.

Finding no other alternative Bipin, who also has another son and daughter, sold his new born child to his neighbour for Rs 1200.

Last Wednesday, Rabindra Bhoi and his wife Sanitalta, a poor Dalit couple of Andholi village in Jagatsainghpur, sold their four-day-old son for Rs 3000 to a childless couple of Puri district to repay the money that Rabindra had borrowed to meet the medical expenses during his wife's delivery.
